Afghan Kilim Runner Ivory Tree of Life
The tribal weavers of Afghanistan — particularly those from the Caucasus-influenced northern and northwestern regions — have long produced flatweave and pile runners of remarkable geometric authority, their compositions rooted in ancient animist and nomadic symbolism passed through generations of oral and visual tradition. This long-format runner presents an ivory ground of unusual luminosity for a tribal piece, upon which a vertical procession of stacked compositions unfolds: a large anchoring diamond medallion at the lower register rendered in deep navy, tobacco brown, and burgundy with a prominent tree-of-life rising from its centre, giving way to paired lozenge forms, hooked octagonal rosettes, and branching geometric shrubs ascending toward the top field — each motif separated by scattered cross and floral fillers that prevent any sense of rigidity. The multi-band border is tightly executed with alternating star-and-reciprocal-hook guards framed by a dominant dark outer border punctuated with geometric devices in red and ochre, maintaining strong lateral containment without competing with the field. The overall palette — ivory against near-black navy, enlivened by madder red and warm camel — carries a graphic tension that reads as both archaic and compositionally modern, suited to long narrow spaces where the eye is invited to travel the full length of the weaving.
