The contemporary machine-made rug tradition of Western Europe — centred in Belgian and Turkish power-loom ateliers — has in recent decades produced some of the most sophisticated interpretations of abstract expressionism translated into pile, drawing on fine art movements to produce pieces that function as floor-level canvases.
This 213x305 cm wool piece presents an entirely open abstract field conceived in the manner of a weathered fresco or aged industrial surface: broad vertical brushstroke striations in slate grey and cool ivory sweep across the central ground, overlaid with a convincing crackle and distressed paint simulation that lends the surface genuine visual depth.
Scattered throughout — with particular density in the lower central and border zones — are irregular bursts of warm gold that read as gilded leaf fragments or exposed metalite substrate, providing luminous contrast against the otherwise cool, desaturated palette.
