The Kathmandu Valley of Nepal has produced some of the finest hand-knotted pile rugs of the modern era, its workshops fusing Tibetan knotting techniques with sophisticated contemporary design sensibilities to create pieces that command serious international collector attention.
This new piece — hand-knotted in wool with meticulous sculptural pile carving — presents a 2x3 compartmental field of six concentric square motifs, each panel composed of graduating inset squares that recede optically toward a central point, an effect heightened by the high-low relief carving that gives the design its pronounced three-dimensional character; the restrained palette moves between silver-grey, sage green, warm taupe and ivory-champagne, tones that shift with ambient light and lend the surface an almost mineral luminosity, while the border sustains the geometric discipline through a continuous register of rectangular block motifs reminiscent of a classical Greek key frieze.
The cumulative effect is of rigorous architectural calm — a piece that rewards close inspection and anchors a considered interior with quiet authority.
