Moroccan Lattice Diamond Cream Grey

The hand-knotted wool rugs of Morocco's Atlas and Middle Atlas regions — particularly those rooted in the Beni Ourain and Azilal tribal traditions — represent one of the most quietly influential weaving cultures of the twentieth century, prized for their abstracted geometry, undyed natural wools, and the meditative rhythm of their repeating motifs.

This piece presents a full all-over diamond lattice across a 152×244 cm field, the fine intersecting diagonal lines forming an unbroken grid of open lozenges each anchored by a small dot or cross accent — a motif vocabulary drawn directly from Berber symbolic practice.

What distinguishes this example is the deliberate ombre wash applied across the field: the ivory ground characteristic of undyed Moroccan wool deepens gradually through soft silver-blue into a settled slate grey at the upper centre, lending the composition a luminous, almost atmospheric quality rarely seen in strictly tribal production and pointing to a contemporary atelier interpretation of the classic Beni Ourain format. The border treatment is minimal — a plain flatwoven cream selvedge with short fringe at both terminations — allowing the field geometry to read without interruption. The piece carries a composed, northern-light restraint that suits considered interiors where geometry does the work that colour typically performs.
