Nepal's Kathmandu Valley has, since the late 20th century, cultivated one of the most technically accomplished hand-knotted wool traditions outside the classical Persian and Central Asian canon, renowned for its high-altitude Tibetan wool, precise knotting densities, and its fluency in translating contemporary design languages into pile construction.
This new large-format piece — measuring 244x305 cm — presents an entirely abstract field composed of staggered horizontal rectangular bars of varying widths, drawn in a tightly disciplined palette of raw ivory, warm cream, gradated mid-grey, and deep charcoal black, the composition darkest and most compressed in the upper register before loosening and brightening toward the lower field, creating a subtle tonal gradient that reads almost cinematically across the surface; the flat, unadorned solid black border frames the composition with graphic authority, and a traditional ivory knotted fringe along the lower edge provides the sole concession to textile heritage.
The piece carries the visual weight of mid-century architectural abstraction — cerebral, spatially confident, and wholly at home in minimalist or brutalist interiors where a rug is required to function as both floor covering and considered object.
