Pakistani Gabbeh Geometric Brown

The Gabbeh tradition of tribal Pakistan descends from a nomadic weaving culture that prizes bold, unencumbered geometry and an intuitive use of natural wool — pieces valued as much for their raw tactile honesty as for their graphic power. This new hand-knotted example in a generous 250×317 cm format presents a commanding modernist composition: a deep chocolate-brown ground anchors an off-centre ivory square border that frames a bicolor inner field split between warm camel-tan and dark brown — a deliberate asymmetry that gives the piece an almost painterly tension. Two small rectangular stripe motifs in brick red and ivory occupy the lower-left and upper-right corners of the outer field, functioning as visual counterweights that prevent the composition from resolving too comfortably. The selvedges retain their natural woven edge with a fine fringe finish, and the wool pile carries the characteristic slight lustre of Pakistani highland fleece.
