Bijar All-Over Ivory

Bijar, situated in the Kurdish highlands of western Iran, produces what collectors and scholars have long called the 'iron rugs of Persia' — their singular density of weave, achieved through a wet-beating technique during knotting, yields a fabric of extraordinary structural rigidity and resilience that only deepens in lustre with age. This piece presents the canonical all-over Herati field composition on a warm ivory ground, the repeating lattice populated by tightly rendered navy and burgundy rosettes enclosed within serrated lanceolate leaves — a pattern whose origins trace to Safavid court manuscripts yet here rendered with the disciplined, slightly geometric hand characteristic of Kurdish tribal workshops. The palette is resolved through punctuations of steel blue and terracotta against the cream field, while the wide main border deploys a classical curvilinear vine scroll bearing alternating palmettes and floral cartouches in navy on a complementary ground, contained by narrow ivory and burgundy guard stripes that frame the composition with quiet authority.
