The Chobi Ziegler tradition, revived in the looms of Peshawar and the Afghan border regions in the late 19th century under European commission, represents a deliberate softening of classical Persian Sultanabad vocabulary — its vegetable-dyed wools left to oxidise into the muted, sun-bleached tonalities that make these carpets uniquely compatible with both antique interiors and contemporary spaces.
This example presents a deep charcoal-slate field densely animated by an all-over lattice of scrolling Acanthus vines, split-leaf arabesques, and open palmettes rendered entirely in warm antique gold and aged honey — a palette of striking tonal contrast that retains an overall sense of quiet restraint rather than decorative agitation.
The composition is non-directional and evenly distributed, with no central focal point, allowing the eye to travel continuously across the surface; the wide border is deliberately understated in a faded ochre-gold ground bearing loosely spaced botanical sprigs and minimal guard stripes, framing the field without competing with it. The flatly worn handle and abrash-like tonal shifts within the charcoal ground suggest a consciously antiqued finish. A piece of considerable graphic weight and compositional discipline — equally at home anchoring a modernist interior or lending warmth to a traditional dining room.
