The Chobi weaving tradition, centred in Peshawar and the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan, draws directly from 19th-century Ziegler & Co. commissions that reinterpreted Persian Sultanabad and Mahal designs for Western taste — prized today for their vegetable-dyed softness, architectural scale, and effortless ability to age gracefully into antique character.
This new 183x274 cm hand-knotted wool piece presents a spacious, airy ivory field populated with an all-over composition of gently meandering vine scrolls, abstracted palmettes, and delicate botanical sprays rendered in muted warm grey and taupe — motifs drawn from the classical Persian Mahal vocabulary but loosened into the characteristic Chobi openness that allows the cream ground to breathe.
The wide border is anchored in slate blue-grey, carrying a dense floral and acanthus scroll interrupted by symmetrical rosette accents, flanked by slender ivory guard stripes that cleanly define the field transition; hand-knotted fringe finishes both ends, confirming the piece's traditional construction. Wool pile with a naturally lustrous, slightly abrash surface lends the rug a washed, almost time-worn quality despite its new condition — a deliberate hallmark of the Chobi dyeing process using plant-based mordants.
