Hamadan All-Over Crimson

The Hamadan weaving district of western Iran — encompassing dozens of villages across the ancient Median heartland — produces some of the most characterful hand-knotted rugs in the Persian tradition, prized for their robust single-weft construction, saturated natural dyes, and the confident directness of their tribal-influenced patterning.

This piece presents a densely populated all-over field in deep madder crimson, structured by a diagonal diamond lattice that distributes stylized Herati rosettes, leaf sprays, and small boteh-derived palmettes with metronomic regularity across the entire ground — the repetition acquiring a meditative rhythm rather than monotony, punctuated by accents of sky blue and ivory that lift the palette from the saturated ground.

The border system is confidently articulated: a broad ivory outer band carries a continuous scrolling vine-and-leaf meander in navy and red, flanked by narrow reciprocal rosette guards in the characteristic Hamadan manner, while ivory fringe at each end signals hand-knotted authenticity.
