The Hamadan weaving district of western Iran — encompassing dozens of Kurdish and Luri tribal villages — has produced some of Persia's most characterful hand-knotted rugs for centuries, prized for their robust single-weft construction, saturated vegetable-derived palettes, and uninhibited tribal energy.
This 128x219 cm piece presents a stacked medallion composition in which two bold navy diamond lobes are suspended against a field of deep madder red, united by a sinuous tree-of-life axis that rises from a densely blooming lower register of open rosettes and stylized palmettes toward a compressed upper medallion anchored near the apex; saffron orange, cobalt blue, rose pink, and ivory accents punctuate the field with a controlled exuberance typical of the Hamadan villages around Tuyserkan and Nahavand.
The border system is well-resolved — a principal stripe of reciprocal vine-and-flower cartouches in dark red and orange flanked by narrow reciprocal-tooth guard bands — lending the composition a satisfying architectural containment. The wool pile carries the characteristic slight lustre of highland Iranian fleece, and the color transitions between navy and red read with the graphic immediacy of tribal work rather than the tightly curvilinear refinement of court-city weaving.
