Kashan All-Over Crimson
Kashan — seated in the arid heart of Isfahan Province — has commanded the summit of Persian weaving for over five centuries, its workshops synonymous with extraordinarily fine knotting, saturated madder-based dyes, and a disciplined arabesque vocabulary that influenced court ateliers from Safavid Persia to Mughal India.
This large-format piece presents a relentless all-over field of spiralling arabesque vines rendered in high-contrast ivory and steel blue against a ground of deep, even crimson, the composition anchored near the centre by a small open rosette that implies a dissolved medallion — a hallmark of classical Kashan draftsmanship.
Ivory split-leaf palmettes and multi-petalled lotus rosettes punctuate the field at measured intervals, while navy accents add depth without disrupting the chromatic warmth. The border system is tripartite: two narrow gold-ground guard stripes frame a substantial steel-blue principal band populated by a continuous reciprocal floral meander, the whole treatment clean and architecturally resolved. The pile is dense and even, the wool lustrous, and the knotting tight enough to hold fine curvilinear detail with minimal pixelation — consistent with contemporary Kashan commercial production at its more accomplished end. A piece of this chromatic authority and compositional density commands a formal room without apology, equally at home beneath a Georgian dining table or anchoring a library with serious intent.
