Kashan All-Over Ivory Navy

Kashan, seated in the arid heart of Isfahan Province, has commanded the summit of Persian court weaving since the Safavid era, its workshops synonymous with disciplined draughtsmanship, exceptionally fine knotting, and an unbroken lineage of master weavers whose output has furnished palaces from Tehran to Vienna. This antique example presents an expansive ivory field animated by a dense all-over repeat of palmette rosettes, lotus blooms, and sinuous arabesque vines rendered in a restrained palette of navy, slate blue, amber gold, and faint rust accents — colours that have mellowed with age into a characteristically soft, luminous harmony rather than the saturated tones of newer production. The composition eschews a central medallion in favour of an uninterrupted floral lattice that fills the field with disciplined rhythmic energy, each motif precisely mirrored across both axes in the manner of a classical Kashan cartoon. The main border carries a stately procession of alternating palmettes and scrolling arabesques framed by paired guard stripes, their navy ground providing a firm architectural frame for the lighter field. Fringe terminals at both ends confirm the hand-knotted wool foundation, and the even, gently compressed pile indicates honest antique wear consistent with a piece of considerable age. A work of measured grandeur that rewards close study, it carries the quiet authority of a documented weaving tradition and would distinguish a serious collection or a formal interior demanding provenance over novelty.
