Kashan Medallion Crimson

Kashan, situated in the central Iranian province of Isfahan, holds one of the most venerated positions in the canon of classical Persian weaving — its workshops have produced court-quality carpets since the Safavid era, distinguished by exceptionally fine knotting, luminous wool, and an architectural formality of design that has remained virtually unchanged for five centuries. This hand-knotted wool carpet presents the quintessential Kashan vocabulary in full command: a deep crimson madder field of considerable saturation anchors a lobed central medallion rendered in ivory and cobalt blue, its interior carrying a formal floral rosette that radiates outward into paired pendant cartouches along the vertical axis. The field beyond the medallion is densely populated with curvilinear arabesques — spiraling vine tendrils bearing palmettes, lotus rosettes, and lancet split-leaves in cobalt, ivory, olive, and gold — woven with the controlled symmetry that distinguishes Kashan from more freely drawn provincial work. The main border, set on midnight navy, deploys the canonical reciprocal palmette-and-vine scroll with precisely resolved corner solutions, framed by subsidiary guard stripes in ivory and gold meander. Measuring 204×280 cm, this piece carries the measured grandeur of a room anchor — intellectually rigorous in its geometry, warm in its palette, and sufficiently resolved in its draftsmanship to reward close inspection.
