Kashan Medallion Crimson

Kashan has stood for over five centuries as the pre-eminent city of Persian court weaving, its workshops producing rugs of extraordinary fineness and botanical precision that furnished the palaces of Safavid shahs and the great houses of Europe.

This hand-knotted wool carpet presents the canonical Kashan vocabulary in full authority: a deep crimson field — the colour achieved through generations of mastery in madder dyeing — anchors a central octagonal medallion rendered in midnight navy and ivory, its interior packed with concentric rosette rings and a jewel-like central floret.

Below the medallion, the composition unfolds in a descending sequence of vase-mounted bouquets whose blooms shift from cream-yellow to powder blue and sage green, each cluster formally balanced across the vertical axis; above, detached palmettes and boteh leaves drift across the field with the controlled asymmetry characteristic of the finest Kashan atelier work. The border system is equally rigorous — a broad main band in slate blue carries a continuous floral meander in ivory and gold, flanked by narrow reciprocal-vine guard stripes — the whole functioning as an architectural frame rather than mere ornament. At 216x338 cm the piece occupies the classical room-sized format intended to command a formal reception space, and its palette of lacquer red against cool blue and warm gold gives it the chromatic authority of a work made for permanent, considered display.
