Kashan Medallion Ivory

Kashan, situated in the high desert plateau of central Iran, is regarded as one of the supreme weaving centres of the Persian world, its workshops producing for centuries rugs distinguished by their fine knotting, luminous ivory grounds, and restrained yet intricate floral draftsmanship.

This hand-knotted wool piece presents the classic Kashan medallion format at its most composed: a lobed, multi-tiered central medallion in navy and crimson floats above an ivory field animated by an uninterrupted all-over network of spiraling arabesques, palmettes, and lotus blooms rendered in navy blue, antique gold, soft taupe, and accents of deep crimson — a palette that reads as both cool and warm simultaneously.

The border system is orthodox and well-proportioned, with a wide principal guard carrying a continuous scrolling vine-and-palmette repeat framed by narrow reciprocal meander guards, all on the same ivory-cream ground that unifies field and surround into a single luminous plane. The fringe termination and the tight, even pile confirm new production to classical cartoons, preserving the formal vocabulary without the attrition of age. At 143×213 cm this is a room-defining accent piece — one that brings scholarly quietude and refined decorative authority to any interior that can meet it on its own terms.
