Kashan Medallion Navy Red

Kashan, situated in the arid heartland of Isfahan Province, has produced some of the most technically refined and compositionally disciplined pile weaving in the Persian canon since at least the Safavid period, its workshops celebrated for dense knotting, lustrous Merino-grade wool, and a vocabulary of curvilinear ornament that set the standard for courtly carpet design. This hand-knotted wool rug in the room-size format of 204×305 cm presents the archetypal Kashan programme with considerable authority: a large lobed central medallion in ivory and crimson floats against a saturated midnight-navy field alive with an unbroken lattice of Shah Abbasi palmettes, lotus rosettes, and sinuous split-leaf arabesques rendered in sky blue, saffron gold, and soft coral, while matched corner spandrels mirror the medallion's geometry to resolve the composition at each quadrant; the ivory main border carries an alternating sequence of large fan palmettes and cloud-band cartouches interlaced by flowing tendrils, framed above and below by narrow reciprocal-rosette guard stripes, with a broader crimson outer border of dense herati-variant palmettes lending the piece a grounded, architecturally weighted presence. The cumulative effect is one of measured opulence — a rug that reads quietly from a distance and rewards close examination, at home in a formal reception room or as the centrepiece of a considered interior that values depth of craft over decorative novelty.
