Kashan, situated along ancient trade routes in central Persia, has produced some of the most refined curvilinear weavings since the Safavid era, prized for their precise knotwork, lustrous wool, and sophisticated Shah Abbas floral vocabulary.
This vintage open-field example presents a gracefully elongated lobed medallion rendered in slate blue and taupe against a heavily abraded ivory ground, where decades of gentle wear have softened the palette to an ethereal whisper of its original tonality. Shah Abbas palmettes cascade from the central axis while sinuous arabesque vines populate the generous open field, their forms emerging and receding as light plays across the distressed pile; elaborate corner spandrels in coordinating slate and charcoal anchor the composition, enclosed by a layered border system featuring reciprocal floral cartouches and delicate guard stripes in muted rose and blue.
