The Kashmir valley has for centuries produced some of the most technically refined hand-knotted silks in the Asian subcontinent, its weavers drawing from both Mughal court traditions and Persian classical vocabulary to yield textiles of exceptional lustre and knot density.

This large-format piece presents a formal kham-bandi compartment field — a layout tracing its lineage to Safavid Bakhtiari and garden carpet prototypes — rendered entirely in pure silk, wherein the characteristic sheen shifts from burnished gold to deep charcoal depending on the angle of light, a phenomenon intrinsic to high-pile silk construction.

The field is partitioned into a dense rectilinear grid of rectangular and square panels, each independently populated with palmette rosettes, stylized boteh, cypress columnar forms, and Shah Abbasi floral sprays against alternating grounds of midnight navy, antique gold, teal, and burnt sienna, creating a rich polychrome rhythm across the surface. The outer border is robustly composed, featuring a wide main band of scrolling arabesque vine punctuated by floral cartouches on a deep burgundy ground, enclosed within narrow ivory and teal guard stripes, all terminating in a white fringe selvedge.
