The Kerman weaving tradition, rooted in the southern Persian city of the same name and faithfully carried forward by Pakistani master weavers, is distinguished by its curvilinear fluency, refined colour sensibility, and an extraordinary density of floral invention that has made it one of the most internationally coveted of all classical carpet styles.
This hand-knotted wool carpet, in new condition and woven in the Pakistani Kerman tradition, presents four monumental boteh forms — the ancient paisley symbol of Zoroastrian flame and Persian royal dress — arranged in strict bilateral symmetry across a deep indigo-black field, each one filled with cascading floral sprays, feathered vine scrolls, and small-scale rosettes rendered in dusty rose, slate blue, and warm ivory; at the composition's heart sits a compact diamond medallion anchoring the vertical axis, while the surrounding field breathes with scattered flossed blossoms that prevent any visual heaviness.
The ivory border is structured across multiple registers of fine floral meander, disciplined in drawing yet lush in accumulation, framing the dark interior with measured restraint. This is a piece of considerable graphic authority — its dramatic contrast between the near-black ground and the rose-blush boteh carries a room with confidence, suited to interiors that reward close looking.
