Kerman Medallion Floral Purple

Kerman, situated in the southeastern province of Iran, has produced some of the most refined and technically accomplished pile rugs in the Persian canon — its weavers renowned since the Safavid era for exceptionally fine knotting, sumptuous floral vocabulary, and an unrivalled mastery of the soft, open-field composition. This large-format piece presents a deep indigo-purple field of commanding presence, anchored by a central diamond medallion rendered in ivory and gold with a delicate lotus core, from which radiates a generous oval ring composed of lush floral bouquets — full-blown peonies, Shah Abbasi palmettes, and densely leafed sprays — each cluster set with sculptural clarity against the saturated ground. The palette is characteristically Kermani in its contrast: the jewelled purple field thrown into sharp relief by ivory-cream motifs touched with antique gold and pale sky blue, lending the composition both luminosity and depth. The wide main border carries a classical scrolling vine populated with palmettes and rosettes, flanked by narrow guard stripes that reinforce the formal symmetry, while the ivory ground of the surround softens the overall drama into something refined rather than imposing. At 283x384 cm, this is a room-defining piece — one that carries the full weight of Kerman's courtly weaving heritage with quiet, unhurried authority.
