Kerman Medallion Navy

Kerman, situated in the southeastern plateau of Iran, has for centuries produced carpets of unrivalled fineness, distinguished by their curvilinear floral vocabulary, high knot density, and a characteristic palette that balances deep ground tones against soft ivory and rose hues — a tradition that placed Kerman weavers among the most celebrated exporters to Western markets from the late Qajar period onward. This piece presents a commanding navy ground of deep indigo character, at the centre of which an elaborate multi-tiered rosette medallion radiates outward in concentric rings of peach, powder blue, and ivory blossoms, the field between medallion and border filled with dense, freely scrolling floral sprays of roses, palmettes, and leafy tendrils rendered in the soft apricot and ice-blue tones quintessential to Kerman work; the border system is composed of a principal floral meander band flanked by narrow reciprocal guard stripes, all maintaining the restrained two-tone palette against the dark ground, while corner pieces echo the central medallion's motifs with quiet precision. The result is a rug of considerable visual depth and formal composure — one that commands a room without demanding it.
