The weaving villages of Khorasan in northeastern Iran produced some of the most prolific and characterful carpets of the late Qajar and early twentieth century — pieces defined by expansive fields, loose curvilinear drawing, and a palette that ages into extraordinary softness.
This large-format antique, measuring nearly ten by eleven feet, carries an all-over field composition in which herati-influenced floral scrolls and palmette forms repeat across a ground that has mellowed to a warm sandy ivory, its wool pile abraded to a low, velvet-smooth surface that speaks to decades of genuine use rather than artificial distress.
Accents of dusty indigo blue surface through the field at irregular intervals, lending the composition a quiet chromatic animation, while the primary border — a confident dark navy band carrying a classical flower-and-leaf reciprocal meander — frames the field with structural authority, flanked by narrower rose-tinged guard stripes. The abrash visible across the field is organic and natural, a hallmark of hand-spun regional wool rather than commercial uniformity. This is a piece that carries the contemplative gravity of a true antique — one whose faded grandeur rewards a slow, discerning eye.
