The Malayer weaving district of Hamadan Province occupies a distinct crossroads in Persian rug history, producing work that fuses the geometric tribal vocabulary of the Hamadan region with a fineness of knotting and chromatic sophistication more commonly associated with urban workshops — a duality that makes authentic Malayer pieces consistently sought by serious collectors.
This wool example presents a classic triple-medallion field composition set against a commanding burnt rust-red ground, with three stepped octagonal medallions arranged along the vertical axis: the central medallion, the largest of the three, opens into a cerulean blue interior filled with a symmetrical rosette and arabesque device rendered in antique gold and coral, while the upper and lower medallions echo its geometry at a reduced scale, each anchored by a dark navy surround alive with latch-hook projections and angular tribal dentils; the open field between them is animated by scattered angular motifs — comb devices, stylized floral sprays, and hooked geometric forms — all executed in navy, ivory, and muted gold against the rust ground; the border system is composed of a bold cerulean blue main guard carrying reciprocal rosette cartouches, flanked by narrow gold and navy stringing bands, creating a frame of confident architectural weight; ivory fringe finishes the short ends with quiet restraint.
