Mashhad Medallion Crimson

Mashhad, the sacred capital of Khorasan in northeastern Iran, has produced some of Persia's most ambitious room-sized carpets since the late Qajar period, its workshops distinguished by generous proportions, lush wool pile dyed in rich madder reds, and a confident command of the classical medallion idiom. This new hand-knotted piece presents a deeply saturated crimson field anchored by a multi-lobed central medallion whose palmette core radiates islimi arabesques and serrated leaf sprays across the open ground, the composition balanced by navy quarter-spandrels at each corner filled with dense peony and rosette clusters; the colour palette — madder crimson, indigo navy, powder blue, antique gold, and muted olive — is characteristic of the Mashhad workshop tradition, where synthetic-free dye recipes produce a warm chromatic depth rather than harsh contrast. The wide main border carries a classical cartouche-and-floral-vine sequence on a navy ground, contained by reciprocal scroll guard stripes in steel blue and ivory that frame the field with architectural precision. A piece of considered formal weight, it commands a room with the quiet authority of a work made to be handed down rather than merely displayed.
