Nain Medallion Dome Silver Ivory

Nain, a city in Isfahan Province, has produced some of Iran's most refined court-quality carpets since the mid-twentieth century, distinguished by extraordinarily fine knotting, restrained aristocratic palettes, and the characteristic interplay of ivory fields against cool silver-grey borders that sets Nain work apart from its neighbours. This piece presents a classic dome composition — a large, tightly packed sunburst medallion at its centre whose radiating lines dissolve outward into a dense, organically flowing field of shah abbasi palmettes, lotus arabesques, and delicate floral sprays rendered in dusty rose, sage green, and slate blue against a warm ivory ground, the whole field contained within a silver-grey transitional border before yielding to a wide main border of scalloped cartouches alternating with floral bouquets, and finally a sweeping outer border of pendant tulip garlands that lends the piece an unusually theatrical finish. The overall palette — cool silver anchoring warm ivory and gold with accents of muted rose and sage — carries the measured, contemplative elegance of a piece made for quiet rooms of consequence.
