Peshawar Palmette Navy
The Peshawar weaving region of Pakistan has emerged as one of the foremost producers of vegetable-dyed rugs in the Ziegler tradition, employing Afghan refugee artisans whose ancestral techniques yield pieces of remarkable softness and luminosity. This newly woven example presents a commanding deep navy field populated by elegant split palmettes and lotus blossoms rendered in warm sand, gold, and ivory tones, their forms connected by sinuous vine scrolls that create a rhythmic vertical movement across the composition. The generous cream border carries a complementary procession of stylized floral heads and serrated leaves, providing visual rest and framing the saturated indigo ground with quiet authority. Subtle vegetable-dye abrash lends depth to the navy, while the wool pile displays the characteristic silken hand that distinguishes fine Peshawar production. A refined piece offering both decorative gravitas and the gentle warmth suited to intimate living spaces or as a distinguished accent in contemporary interiors.
