Qum All-Over Floral Steel Blue

Qum — established in the early twentieth century as one of Iran's most technically ambitious weaving centres — is renowned for its extraordinarily fine knotting, silk-like wool pile, and a design vocabulary drawn from the classical Safavid court tradition, making its productions among the most collectible of contemporary Persian output.

This piece presents a full-field all-over composition on a cool steel-blue ground, structured by a continuous curvilinear lattice of ivory vine stems that divide the field into ogival compartments, each inhabited by a large compound palmette or lotus rosette rendered in gold, warm ochre, teal, and burgundy — the colour relationships precise and jewel-like rather than saturated.

Smaller five-petal blossoms, feathery split-leaf arabesques, and spiralling cloud-scroll fillers occupy every interval, giving the field a dense yet rhythmically ordered presence. The border system is confidently executed: a commanding main band of midnight black carries a continuous reciprocal floral meander in gold and ivory, bracketed by narrow guard stripes in tan and charcoal that contain the composition with architectural authority. The palette — cool blue field against a black border relieved by warm gold — is a classical Qum chromatic formula that reads with equal conviction in natural and artificial light.
