Qum — the holy city of central Iran — is revered as the producer of Persia's most technically demanding carpets, its weavers historically achieving knot densities and draughtsmanship rivalling illuminated manuscripts, making a genuine Qum piece among the most collectible of all Persian court traditions.
This large-format example presents an ivory ground of exceptional luminosity, anchored by a tightly rendered concentric sunburst medallion at its centre — its innermost rings drawn with the minute feathering characteristic of the Qum atelier — from which dense arabesque vine scrollwork radiates outward in ivory, gold and muted sage, punctuated by lotus palmettes, tulip sprays and delicate blossom clusters across the entire field.
The inner field is framed by a shaped cartouche border in deep crimson, creating a classic lobed medallion outline at head and foot, while the outer border carries a disciplined reciprocal palmette-and-vine repeat in antique gold against a warm ochre ground, itself contained within narrow reciprocal guard stripes. The palette — cool ivory, burnished gold, and controlled crimson accents — projects an almost scholarly restraint, the composition carrying the formality of a royal prayer hall without the weight of darker grounds, making this a piece of genuine architectural presence suited to rooms of considered scale and quiet confidence.
