Senneh Medallion Herati Slate Blue

Woven in Senneh — the historic capital of Iranian Kurdistan and one of the most technically exacting weaving centres in the Persian world — these rugs are distinguished by their exceptionally fine knotting, characteristic use of the asymmetric Persian knot on a cotton or wool foundation, and a palette of cool, mineral-derived tones that set them apart from the warmer workshops of central Iran.

This hand-knotted wool piece presents a classic Senneh composition: a large elongated hexagonal medallion with deeply stepped, crenellated edges and pointed lancet pendants floats over a field densely packed with the herati repeat — rosettes cradled within diamond lattice and flanked by the signature fish-leaf motif — rendered here in a distinctive slate blue and dusty rose that gives the field an almost silvered luminosity.

The surrounding ground is a deep midnight navy, creating sharp tonal contrast that makes the medallion read with architectural clarity, while ivory corner spandrels soften the transition to the multi-band border system, which sequences a reciprocal vine guard, a boteh-populated main border, and a final geometric stripe in red and blue. The fringe at both ends remains intact, consistent with new stock condition. A piece of measured restraint and considerable technical ambition, suited to interiors that reward close looking.
