Sultanabad All-Over Muted Blue

The Sultanabad region of west-central Iran — weaving under the commercial impetus of the Ziegler & Co. era — produced some of the nineteenth and early twentieth century's most sought-after carpets, celebrated for their grand scale, airy open fields, and deliberately subdued, abrash-rich palettes that age with extraordinary grace.

This large-format piece presents an expansive all-over field in washed steel blue and warm ivory, populated by loosely drawn oversized palmettes, herati-derived floral rosettes, and scrolling botanical sprays rendered in sage, dusty taupe, and pale celadon — the overall effect intentionally diffuse, as though the design has been softened by decades of filtered light.

The border treatment is characteristically restrained: a series of narrow guard stripes and a modest main border with a continuous vine-and-floral ribbon that frames without competing, keeping the eye drawn inward to the meditative field. Ivory fringe at both terminals completes the composition with proper textile formality. A piece of this palette and scale commands a room through quietude rather than insistence, lending itself to interiors where restraint is the governing aesthetic principle.
