Tabriz Mahi Medallion Midnight Blue

Tabriz, the great carpet-weaving capital of northwestern Iran, has for centuries produced rugs of unrivalled technical refinement — its weavers celebrated for the precision of their knotting, the sophistication of their draftsmanship, and the disciplined elegance of the Mahi, or fish, field pattern derived from the ancient Herati motif.

This new hand-knotted wool example presents the classic Tabriz Mahi composition in commanding scale: a deep midnight-blue field blanketed in the characteristic all-over Mahi repeat of interlocking rosettes and lancet leaves resolving, at the centre, into a large ivory-ground lobed diamond medallion inset with a smaller teal and camel nested medallion — the whole cartouche suspended in the field like an illuminated folio.

A secondary arabesque pendant drops below, maintaining the vertical rhythm, while the ivory scalloped surround creates a luminous contrast against the saturated indigo ground. The main border deploys a formal procession of oval floral medallions on a dark ground, flanked by fine reciprocal guard stripes in ivory and terracotta, with white-knotted fringe completing the lower finish. Reserved in palette yet commanding in presence, this piece carries the quiet authority of classical Persian court weaving — equally at home in a formal interior as in a discerning collection.
