This hand-knotted wool carpet presents the canonical mahi format in full expression: a densely packed herati fish-scale field rendered across a deep midnight navy ground, punctuated at the centre by a large multi-lobed cusped medallion that transitions from blush rose through ivory at its innermost register, with delicate pendant finials extending north and south along the vertical axis; the ivory corner spandrels carry reciprocal quarter-medallion motifs that lock the composition into rigorous geometric balance, while the main border deploys the characteristic Tabriz palmette-and-serrated-vine sequence between fine guard stripes of geometric repeat, the outermost border returning to navy with scrolling arabesques that frame the whole with architectural finality.
The piece carries the restrained authority of a room anchor — at once intellectually demanding and atmospherically grounding, suited to spaces that reward sustained attention.
