Tabriz Medallion Ivory

Tabriz, the historic capital of Iranian Azerbaijan, stands as one of the supreme centres of classical Persian carpet weaving, producing pieces of unrivalled technical refinement and compositional ambition for over five centuries — its rugs are benchmarks against which all other Persian work is measured.

This hand-knotted wool carpet in the 207×293 cm room size presents the canonical Tabriz medallion format on an expansive antique-ivory ground: a hexagonal central medallion anchored by a dark navy and madder cross-rosette core is set against a field of exceptional density, populated with symmetrically arranged floral sprays, slender cypress silhouettes, arabesque tendrils, scattered palmettes, and faint animal figures worked in burnt orange, teal, magenta, olive, and gold — a palette that reads simultaneously warm and jewel-bright.

The inner spandrels are filled with a deep crimson-magenta that frames the ivory ground like a manuscript illumination, while the main border, rendered in a rich madder red, carries a classical repeating vine-and-rosette cartouche sequence flanked by narrow teal guard stripes with reciprocal floral meander. The pile condition is full and the colour saturation consistent throughout, indicating quality dyestuffs and skilled finishing. A piece of this chromatic complexity and compositional discipline brings scholarly weight to a formal interior while retaining the warmth that defines the great Persian domestic tradition.
