Ziegler All-Over Crimson

The Ziegler-Sultanabad tradition, originating in the Arak region of west-central Iran and refined by the Anglo-Swiss Ziegler & Co. firm in the late 19th century, produced a distinctive idiom of relaxed, large-scale florals on open fields that became among the most internationally sought Persian weaving expressions of the modern era.

This 204x296 cm piece renders that vocabulary faithfully — a deep, saturated crimson field carries an all-over scatter of detached palmette rosettes and unfurling arabesque scrolls in ivory, dusty blue, and sage green, each motif generously spaced to preserve the commanding warmth of the ground colour.

The wide ivory main border is populated with a continuous vine-and-flower procession punctuated by larger floral medallions at the corners, contained by narrow reciprocating guard bands that frame the composition with quiet precision. The palette — madder crimson against aged ivory with cool celadon and slate accents — reflects the deliberately softened, antique-sympathetic colorway for which Ziegler-style productions are celebrated. At nearly three metres in length, this rug brings the unhurried grandeur of a late-19th-century Persian salon into a contemporary interior without decorative apology.
