The Ersari Turkoman tribes of northern Afghanistan and the Amu Darya basin have sustained one of Central Asia's most architecturally powerful weaving traditions, producing large-format pieces whose monumental scale and saturated vegetable dyes — anchored by madder-derived crimsons — have long commanded serious collector attention.
This oversized hand-knotted piece presents a classic Tauk Naska field composition: three columns of dominant octagonal elephant-foot guls march across an intense madder crimson ground, each medallion quartered internally and anchored by a stylized rosette, while hooked latch appendages and crab-claw connectors animate the negative space between repeats with restless tribal energy; toward the upper field the palette deepens appreciably into near-black navy, a chromatic shift consistent with natural dye variation across the length of a large loom — a hallmark of authentic Turkoman production rather than a flaw.
The multi-band border system is handled with characteristic Ersari restraint: a primary guard of reciprocal trefoil vine flanks a wider main stripe of stepped diamond chains, the whole perimeter drawing the eye inward and reinforcing the piece's imposing lateral span of 305 cm. At nearly five metres in length, this is a room-defining tribal document — austere, deeply saturated, and possessed of the kind of quiet authority that only scale and genuine craft can produce.
