Afghan Ersari Gul Red

The Ersari Turkmen of northern Afghanistan represent one of the great tribal weaving traditions of Central Asia, producing rugs of exceptional wool quality and saturated natural dye work that have been prized by collectors since the nineteenth century. This large-format piece presents the canonical Ersari field arrangement: rows of bold octagonal fil-pa guls — the so-called elephant foot medallions — rendered in near-black navy against a deep madder red ground of remarkable warmth and evenness, each gul densely filled with geometric subcompartments and flanked by cruciform and branching minor motifs that animate the field without disrupting its monumental rhythm; the border system comprises multiple guard stripes of reciprocal trefoil and diamond chain patterns that frame the composition with characteristic Turkmen restraint, the palette held throughout to the classic two-tone red-and-dark register that distinguishes genuine Ersari tribal work from later commercial imitations.
