Afghan Khal Mohammadi All-Over Crimson

Northern Afghanistan's Khal Mohammadi weaving tradition — centred around the Kunduz and Andkhoy regions — is among the most disciplined expressions of tribal pile weaving in Central Asia, prized for its saturated madder dyes, dense wool pile, and the almost meditative regularity of its gul-field compositions.

This large-format piece presents a classic all-over field in deep madder crimson, populated with row upon row of stylised octagonal guls rendered in midnight navy and accented with saffron gold and ivory highlights; secondary diamond medallions punctuate the intervals between primary guls, while small hooked rosettes and geometric filler devices fill the residual ground without crowding it.

The multi-layered border system is particularly well-resolved: a narrow inner guard stripe of reciprocal vine scroll gives way to a bold main border carrying arched niche repeats — a motif echoing Turkic protective symbolism — before closing with a further guard of running S-scrolls in gold and navy. The wool is lustrous and firm, consistent with contemporary Khal Mohammadi production using traditional vegetable-influenced dye bases. At 256 × 357 cm, this piece commands a room with the quiet authority of a weaving culture that has never needed ornament for its own sake.
