Hand-spun mountain wool thrives in busy rooms.
The Bakhtiari tribal weavers of the Chahar Mahal valley in west-central Iran are celebrated for their exuberant garden-compartment rugs, a tradition rooted in the ancient Persian concept of paradise as a walled garden divided into irrigated quadrants — a design language that has remained largely unchanged for over two centuries and is among the most immediately recognisable in the entire canon of Oriental weaving.
This hand-knotted wool example in 140x249 cm presents the archetypal Bakhtiari field composition: a dense interlocking ogival lattice divides the ground into a repeating sequence of pointed oval compartments, each alternating between a deep madder red, a rich indigo navy, and a warm ivory ground, creating a robust chromatic rhythm that energises the full field without ever feeling restless.
Within each cell, full-blown peony and cabbage-rose clusters rendered in blush pink and dusty rose are anchored by feathered cypress-leaf forms that serve simultaneously as vertical dividers and as symbols of eternity in Persian iconography; rosette nodes punctuate every lattice intersection in saffron gold and pale blue, lending structural clarity. The multi-stripe border is classically proportioned — a principal floral meander of scrolling vines and split-palmettes on navy, flanked by reciprocal guard stripes in ivory and red — providing a firm architectural frame without competing with the animated interior. The wool pile carries a tight, even knotting consistent with workshop-grade Bakhtiari production, with good colour saturation and clear motif definition throughout. A piece of deliberate tribal grandeur, equally at home in a formal dining room or a library, where its narrative density rewards prolonged acquaintance.
Oversized peony and rose clusters as central compartment fill, stylized feathered cypress leaves as vertical dividers, rosette medallions at lattice intersections, scrolling vine and palmette border with reciprocal floral meander guard stripes
