The Bakhtiari tribal weavers of the Chahar Mahal region in the Zagros Mountains of western Iran are celebrated for their khamseh garden rugs — a tradition rooted in nomadic memory of paradise gardens, producing pieces of remarkable chromatic vitality and narrative botanical richness that have commanded serious collector attention for over a century.
This new hand-knotted wool example presents the quintessential Bakhtiari panel format: a field divided into a regular grid of rectangular compartments, each enclosing an individual garden tableau — cypress trees in deep navy, flowering shrubs in crimson and ivory, paired birds rendered in white against dark grounds, pomegranate boughs, and stylised vase-and-tree compositions — with alternating panel grounds in crimson, midnight navy, ivory, and forest green creating the characteristic checkerboard rhythm that distinguishes this weaving tradition.
The border is classically proportioned, deploying a continuous ivory ground populated with bold floral vine scroll and angular leaf forms in navy, green, and burnt orange, flanked by narrow reciprocal guard stripes. Measuring 152x305 cm, the elongated format amplifies the garden narrative across its full length, each panel insisting on individual contemplation while the whole reads as an organised, living landscape — a piece with the self-assured directness of tribal craft and the compositional ambition of a court tradition.
