The nomadic and semi-nomadic Baluch weavers of the Afghanistan-Iran borderlands have produced some of the most tonally dramatic tribal weavings in the Islamic world, their work defined by a rigorous geometry rooted in ancient animist and shamanistic symbolism rendered in the characteristically deep, iron-rich palette of madder and natural indigo.

This hand-knotted wool rug presents a classic column-of-guls composition: three large stepped octagonal medallions descend the vertical axis of a near-black field, each enclosing a distinct geometric interior — a starburst rosette, a quartered lozenge with hooked appendages, and a compartmentalized center in ivory and camel — all set against a ground saturated in Baluch crimson that shifts between madder red and burgundy depending on the light.
