Bidjar Medallion Crimson

Bidjar, known as the 'Iron Rug' of Persia, emerges from the Kurdish weaving villages of Iran's Kurdistan Province, where weavers traditionally wet the weft threads during knotting to produce an exceptionally dense, rigid pile that has made these carpets among the most structurally durable hand-knotted textiles ever produced. This piece presents a deeply saturated crimson field — the characteristic madder-derived ground of the Bidjar tradition — animated across its entire surface by a tightly rendered herati pattern of rosettes cradled within lancet-leaf frames, all subordinate to a commanding lobed star medallion positioned in the upper field, its dark navy ground richly articulated with olive-green arabesques and a vivid cobalt-and-saffron central roundel; pendant cartouches extend above and below the medallion, and the ivory outlines provide luminous contrast against the jewel-toned palette. The main border carries the characteristic Bidjar scrolling floral vine in navy, flanked by ivory guard stripes bearing reciprocal rosette chains, while the lower field retains a subtle asymmetry suggesting either a traditional compositional convention or the honest hand of a village weaver. Dense, tightly packed, and tonally rich, this is a carpet of considerable physical presence — one suited to a room that can absorb its chromatic weight and reward close examination.
