Hamadan Medallion Crimson

The Hamadan weaving district of western Iran encompasses hundreds of villages, each contributing a distinct tribal hand to one of Persia's most prolific and historically continuous rug-producing regions, prized for robust single-weft construction, saturated natural dyes, and an uninhibited directness of design that distinguishes village work from courtly atelier production.

This piece presents a boldly open crimson field — the tone a deep madder red with the warmth of age-ripened wool — anchored by a single large stepped medallion rendered in midnight navy outlined with olive gold, its interior populated with polychrome geometric compartments in saffron, burnt orange, and rose; the upper field is sparse, punctuated only by two pairs of scattered diamond star motifs in orange and yellow that lend an airy, uncluttered quality, while the lower field is dominated by a naturalistic yet stylized multi-headed floral spray rising from a single dark stem with paired leaf sprigs — a motif more freely drawn than the medallion above it, betraying the spontaneous hand of a village weaver working from memory rather than cartoon.

The main border is a deep navy with a running programme of small tribal florals and geometric devices contained between narrow reciprocal guard stripes in gold and red; the stepped corner treatments in the border's inner frame echo the medallion's serrated geometry and unify the composition.
