The Hamadan weaving district of western Iran encompasses hundreds of villages producing some of the most characterful tribal and semi-tribal rugs in the Persian canon — pieces distinguished by robust wool quality, saturated natural dyes, and an unmediated geometric directness that sets them apart from the courtly refinement of Kashan or Isfahan.
This example presents a classic single-medallion composition on a deep madder red field: a stepped, latch-hooked octagonal medallion in burnt orange and midnight navy anchors the centre, its vertical axis extended by pointed pendants that reach toward angular corner spandrels filled with stylised floral and vine motifs in steel blue and ivory.
The surrounding field is populated with tribal arabesques and subsidiary rosette clusters, lending the composition a controlled density characteristic of village Hamadan work. The border treatment follows a traditional multi-band structure with a dominant guard stripe carrying repeating rosette medallions in contrasting navy and ivory, reinforcing the geometric rigour of the overall composition. The palette — built from madder, indigo, and orange — carries the warm, earthy authority of naturally dyed wool, and the piece sits with the quiet confidence of a work made for use as much as for admiration.
