Hamedan, the ancient capital of the Medes in western Iran, has sustained an unbroken weaving tradition across millennia, producing robust village and tribal rugs distinguished by their bold geometry, saturated natural dyes, and vigorous interpretive take on classical Persian motifs.
This piece presents a commanding central starburst medallion rendered in ivory against a densely populated madder-red field, the surrounding ground woven with a compressed Herati-derived lattice of rosettes, palmettes, and stylized floral heads in dusty rose, saffron, and navy — a composition characteristic of the Hamedan district's single-weft tribal construction.
Ivory corner spandrels anchor the field with geometric precision, while the border system employs a wide navy main band carrying a reciprocal vine-and-palmette scroll, bookended by narrow ivory and red guard stripes that contain the visual energy with disciplined restraint. The wool pile retains its full lustre indicating a recently completed piece, and the overall hand maintains the slightly coarser, characterful tension typical of village workshop production rather than urban atelier work.
