Kazak Compartmental Medallion Grey

The Kazak weaving tradition, rooted in the high pastures of the South Caucasus and carried forward by Afghan tribal workshops, represents one of the most architecturally bold lineages in Oriental rug-making — characterized by its emphatic geometry, saturated palette, and an almost totemic confidence in pattern that distinguishes it from the more refined court traditions of Persia.

This new hand-knotted wool example measures 168x244 cm and presents a classic compartmental field format in which twelve stepped-octagon and square medallion panels are distributed across a warm slate-grey ground in a staggered four-row arrangement; each panel is individually coloured — navy, golden yellow, sky blue, blush pink, ivory, and taupe — and filled with a distinct interior motif including hooked pinwheels, cruciform florettes, latch-hook stars, and angular vine scrolls, creating a taxonomy-like display of Caucasian geometric vocabulary.

Small diamond and cruciform filler elements animate the grey field between panels, while the border system comprises a primary band of reciprocal hooked-scroll kochanak motifs flanked by narrow running guards with repetitive cross and X-form elements, all rendered in the same restrained but richly varied palette. The grey ground is an unusual and sophisticated choice — it tempers the polychrome exuberance of the panels into something closer to a collector's cabinet piece than a village floor covering, lending the rug an understated authority well-suited to both contemporary interiors and serious tribal collections.
