The Kazak-weaving tradition of the southern Caucasus — and its closely related Afghan revival schools — is celebrated for an uninhibited boldness of palette, architecturally spare compositions, and a vocabulary of talismanic symbols rooted in nomadic cosmology, producing works that carry as much spiritual charge as decorative presence.
This new hand-knotted wool piece presents an expansive silver-blue field populated in an open all-over arrangement with polychrome hooked lozenge medallions rendered in saffron gold, navy, crimson, sage green, and teal — each enclosing a cross-arrow device that references ancient Caucasian protective symbolism; between the medallions, stylised anthropomorphic figures, serrated tree forms, kochak ram-horn scrolls, and double-headed arrow motifs drift freely across the ground in the manner of an Ikat-inflected tribal scatter, lending the composition an almost manuscript-like quality.
The border system is decisive: a primary band of bold reciprocal red-and-ivory chevrons commands the perimeter with graphic authority, framed by narrow navy-and-grey running-scroll guards that discipline the exuberance within. At 201×305 cm, this piece carries the restless, sky-wide energy of steppe weavings while its cooled silver ground gives it a contemporary restraint that makes it as suited to a considered modern interior as to a serious tribal collection.
