Kazak Medallion Blue Red

The Kazak weaving tradition of the South Caucasus — spanning the highlands straddling present-day Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia — produced some of the most boldly graphic and chromatically vivid tribal rugs of the 19th and early 20th centuries, prized by collectors for their uncompromising geometric vocabulary and the exceptional vibrancy of their natural dyes.

This piece presents the classic Kazak central-medallion format: a large stepped octagonal diamond, framed in olive-brown and ivory lattice banding, dominates an open ivory field and carries at its heart a cruciform star rosette rendered in sky blue, ivory, and madder red — a motif strongly associated with the Bordjalou and Lori-Pambak sub-districts.

The dominant indigo blue inner border is densely populated with angular reciprocal motifs and stylized zoomorphic or vegetal hook forms, while the cream outer border runs a crisp procession of stepped arrowhead and geometric palmette devices in red and brown; knotted white fringe is present on both terminal ends, intact and even. The palette — saturated indigo, burning madder, warm ivory, muted olive, and touches of woad blue — displays the characteristic tonal depth of natural wool dyes. A piece of commanding spatial presence, suited to a serious collector or an interior that can absorb the full authority of the Caucasian tribal canon.
