Kazak Medallion Blue

The Kazak weaving tradition of the South Caucasus — spanning the highlands of present-day Azerbaijan and Armenia — is among the most revered in the tribal canon, prized for its bold geometry, saturated vegetable dyes, and the raw, expressive energy that no urban workshop has ever fully replicated.

This piece presents a deep slate-blue field of exceptional saturation, anchored by two large stepped diamond medallions rendered in crimson red with sage-green interior cartouches and ivory star centres — a quintessential Kazak compositional device known for its commanding spatial presence.

Four octagonal medallions flank the central axis, each filled with stylized zoomorphic or botanical forms in the characteristic Kazak palette of green, gold, and ivory, while scattered latch-hook crosses, S-motifs, and cruciform fillers animate the open ground. The ivory main border carries a repeating polychrome geometric vine with alternating directional elements, framed by narrow reciprocal guard bands — a border treatment consistent with the Cloudband or Lori-Pambak sub-group vocabulary. The white fringe is intact and the wool pile retains full lustre, consistent with new production in the revivalist Caucasian tradition.
