Kazak Medallion Ivory

The Kazak weaving tradition, rooted in the rugged highlands of the South Caucasus and carried forward by Afghan artisans who inherited its vocabulary, is celebrated for its bold geometric architecture, saturated tribal palette, and the raw structural energy that distinguished it from the more courtly Persian canon. This new hand-knotted wool piece presents a classic tri-medallion composition on an expansive ivory ground — three distinct eight-pointed star medallions scaled in deliberate hierarchy: a compact madder red medallion at the upper field, a commanding sky-blue and gold star medallion at centre, and a deep crimson octagram at the lower register, each articulated with serrated latch-hook edges and nested geometric sub-panels housing cross, diamond, and stylized floral devices. The open ivory field is animated by a disciplined scattering of Lesghi stars, hooked palmettes, pinwheel rosettes, and angular botanical sprays in olive green, gold, and navy — motifs that function as a tribal grammar between the dominant medallions. The border system is handled with authority: a wide madder red main border carries bold rosette and hooked-floral repeats, flanked by multiple narrow guard stripes in reciprocating blue and gold geometric sequences, lending the composition a structured, almost architectural frame.
