Kazak Medallion Salmon

The Kazak-weaving tradition of the South Caucasus — straddling the highlands of present-day Azerbaijan and Armenia — is among the most celebrated in the Oriental rug canon, prized for its bold geometric architectonics, saturated natural dyes, and a structural vitality that distinguishes it unmistakably from its Persian and Anatolian counterparts. This piece presents three vertically stacked stepped-octagon medallions, each enclosing a crisp eight-pointed star on a field of warm madder-tinged salmon rose, the surrounding ground populated with latch-hook rosettes, S-hook devices, and stylised cross ornaments in cobalt, teal, and ivory that animate the open field without crowding it; the primary border is a commanding cobalt blue band carrying a reciprocal arrow or running-dog repeat flanked by narrow ivory guard stripes, while the outermost register introduces a secondary palette of soft teal and blush that tempers the boldness of the interior composition.
